NYSED licenses individual veterinary professionals. Agriculture & Markets separately licenses qualifying pet dealers and, since December 15, 2025, shelters and rescues. New York pet stores may not sell dogs, cats, or rabbits as of December 15, 2024. Those programs are not a general statewide license for every boarding, grooming, walking, sitting, or training business; local zoning, facility, and business rules can still apply. Verify the provider's exact service and location with the linked state authority and municipality.

Frequently Asked Questions

1Are there good local pet stores in Pomona?

Compare Pomona stores by the exact products you need, staff ability to explain product labels and store policies, inventory availability, returns, and accessibility. A directory listing does not establish product quality or staff expertise, and animal-specific nutrition or health advice should come from your veterinarian.

2How do I choose the right food for my pet?

Ask your veterinarian about your pet's species, life stage, health, and calorie needs. On the package, review the product name, species and life-stage directions, calorie information, and nutritional-adequacy statement. FDA explains that a “complete and balanced” claim should identify an AAFCO nutrient profile or feeding-trial basis. Do not choose a food for a medical condition based only on a store recommendation.Source: FDA complete-and-balanced pet food guidance (reviewed July 2026)

3Do local pet stores in Pomona cost more than big box stores?

Prices and promotions change. Compare the same brand, formula, package size, and unit price, then consider delivery fees, loyalty terms, return policy, and product availability. A local or chain label alone does not show which option costs less or offers better guidance.

4How do I read pet food labels to know if it's actually good?

Start with the nutritional-adequacy statement, intended species and life stage, feeding directions, calories, ingredient list, and manufacturer contact information. FDA explains what a “complete and balanced” statement means and how it relates to an AAFCO nutrient profile or feeding trial. The first ingredient alone does not establish whether a diet is appropriate for your pet; ask your veterinarian about animal-specific or therapeutic needs.Source: FDA complete-and-balanced pet food guidance (reviewed July 2026)

5What supplies do I need when first getting a pet in Pomona?

Build the list around the animal's species, age, size, health, housing, transport, identification, feeding, toileting, exercise, and enrichment needs. Confirm fit and safety for carriers, crates, collars, harnesses, toys, and other equipment. Arrange veterinary guidance and check your own municipality's current licensing rules rather than relying on a store or a general county-wide statement.
